    The act of taking or pulling something out, usually with some force or effort. A dentist performs a 'tooth extraction' (pulling out a tooth). Companies do the 'extraction' of oil or minerals from the ground. It can also mean pulling information out of someone, sometimes by force or trickery. There's also an older, more formal use for family background — 'of Italian extraction' means your family originally came from Italy.
