Extortion is the name of the crime — and of the act — of forcing someone to give you money or something else by threat. The verb is ; this noun names the deed, and sometimes the money taken. Newspapers, police, and lawyers use it. Though actually, people also use it more loosely about any demand that feels like a shakedown, even when it may not meet a court’s test. In careful English you commit extortion or you are charged with extortion; you do not usually “do an extortion” the way you “do a job.”
