    To extort something is to make a person give it to you by threat — most often money. It is a crime. A gang that says “pay us or we hurt your shop” is trying to extort money. Police and news reports use this word. Though actually, writers also stretch it a little: someone may extort a promise or a confession by fear or pressure, even when a court might use a more exact name. The core picture stays the same: you twist it out of someone; they did not give it freely. It is not a word for ordinary asking, and it is not the same as a hard bargain between two people who can both walk away.
