Extermination is the act — or the finished result — of killing a group of people or animals so that kind no longer exists. Same weight as the verb: in a history book it is mass killing; on a shop sign it may just mean killing the insects in a building. The word itself does not tell you which. The rest of the sentence does. It is formal. Though actually, pest companies like it because it sounds complete and professional, while the same noun about people sounds like one of the darkest words we have. There is no soft middle use.
