In this sense, exploded does not mean a bomb went off. An exploded drawing, exploded view, or exploded model shows every piece of a thing pulled apart in space, but still lined up the way they fit. You can see the screw, the lid, the inside, and how they would go back together. Engineers and instruction books use this a lot. The picture looks as if someone has gently blown the object open — though actually nothing is broken; the parts are only shown separately so you can read them.
