    Exotica are things that feel unusual and because they seem to come from far away — , bright cloth, strange plants, music that sounds like another country. It is a slightly old-fashioned, magazine kind of word, not the one you use for a plastic souvenir from the airport. In the 1950s people even used it for a style of lounge music full of bird calls and fake-island sounds. You almost never point at one object and call it 'an exotica'; the word names a mix, a shelf of foreign-feeling things. Though actually, what counts as exotic depends on where you stand. A Taiwan night market can feel like exotica to a visitor from Europe, and a French bakery can feel like exotica here.
