Exhilarated describes how a person feels: extremely happy, , and full of energy, usually right after doing something thrilling. You come off a roller coaster exhilarated. You finish a hard race exhilarated. You walk out of a great concert exhilarated. It is a feeling word about you, not about the thing — so it goes with people: "I felt exhilarated," "the crowd was exhilarated." Two things worth noticing. It is a short-lived feeling; it belongs to the minutes and hours after something, not to a settled mood — nobody is exhilarated about their life in general. And it mixes energy with happiness, which is what separates it from plain "happy." You can be happy sitting quietly; exhilarated has your heart still beating fast. Because of that energy, it often shows up alongside slight fear or exhaustion: "exhausted but exhilarated" and "terrified and exhilarated at the same time" are both very natural English.
組成exhilarate + -ed. The -ed ending here makes an adjective describing the person who receives the feeling. Underneath: ex- (thoroughly) + Latin hilaris (cheerful).
