To exfoliate is to rub or wash dead skin off the surface of your body so the skin feels smoother. People do it with a rough cloth, a scrub, or a cream that has tiny grains. Beauty shops and skin-care ads use this word constantly; it sounds a little technical, which is why the ads like it. You exfoliate a face or a body. You do not exfoliate a floor, though the picture is the same as stripping old layers off. In science, rocks can exfoliate too, shedding thin sheets, but will almost only meet the skin-care sense. At home, people more often just say they are doing a skin scrub.
