Execrable means extremely bad — so bad you almost want to spit the thing out. It is a strong, rather word. People use it for films, food, writing, weather, behaviour: “execrable service,” “an execrable pun.” It is not street slang; it sounds educated and a little old-fashioned, which is why writers like it when they want to sound both angry and precise. Though actually, the old heart of the word is closer to “worthy of a curse” than to “a bit poor.” So in careful use it is much stronger than bad or even terrible — though some speakers now just mean “really bad.” It has nothing to do with execute or executive, even though the spelling looks .
