To exclaim is to say something suddenly and with force, because surprise, anger, joy, or pain has pushed the words out. It is usually a short burst, not a speech: “Look!” “I knew it!” “How could you?” In novels you will see the neat tag she exclaimed after those cries. Though actually, in the street people almost never describe themselves with this verb. They shout, they , they just say the thing. Exclaim feels a little — a teacher’s and a ’s word. The feeling can be happy or angry; the word does not pick a mood. What it marks is the jump in the voice. There is a rare noun, an exclaim, but almost everyone uses for the cry itself.
