In a way that wears your patience out. Unlike , this one does not describe the person — it describes the thing, and it very often sits right in front of a describing word to push it further: exasperatingly slow, exasperatingly vague, exasperatingly polite. That is its most common job, and it carries a small complaint inside it. "The queue was exasperatingly slow" says both that it was slow and that you were losing patience standing in it. It can also describe how something is done — "He answered exasperatingly calmly, as if nothing had happened" — where the calm itself is the thing making you crazy. It is a formal, written-feeling word; in conversation people reach for "unbelievably slow" or " slow" instead.
