Describes a thing, a situation, or a person that keeps you until your patience runs out. This is the -ing side of the pair: the thing that causes the feeling. A slow website, a form you must fill in four times, a friend who is always twenty minutes late — all exasperating. It is stronger and more tired-sounding than ; it carries the idea that this has been going on and shows no sign of stopping. It feels slightly formal or , so in speech many people would say , or just "so ". You will most often see it before a noun (an exasperating delay, an exasperating habit) or after be ("It's exasperating."). One thing worth noticing: you can call a person exasperating and still love them. It is a complaint, not an insult — parents say it about children all the time.
組成exasperate (to wear someone's patience down) + -ing, the ending that points at the cause of a feeling rather than the person who feels it. The root is Latin asper, 'rough'.
