An ex-con is a person who was in prison for a crime and is now free. It is informal. Newspapers and crime stories use it a lot; though actually, in some mouths it sounds rough, as if the prison years are still the main thing about the person. A kinder or more careful way is former prisoner or ex-convict. Con here is short for convict. It is not the con in con artist, which means a trick — that is a different word that just looks the same.
ex-con 指曾經因為犯罪坐過牢、現在已經出獄的人，屬於口語。新聞和犯罪故事常用它。這裡的 con 是 convict（罪犯）的縮寫。
有些人說起來語氣比較粗，好像坐牢的經歷就是這個人最主要的標籤。比較客氣的說法是「former prisoner」或「ex-convict」。
「con artist」的 con 是騙局的意思，是另外一個字，只是拼法一樣。
