When an animal or plant evolves, it changes slowly over a very long time, often becoming a different kind of living thing.

Borrowed from Latin ēvolvō "to unroll, unfold", from ē- (out) + volvō (roll) — literally the unrolling of a scroll. The modern sense of gradual, step-by-step emergence over time is that unrolling seen in slow motion.
evolve 借自拉丁文 ēvolvō「攤開、展開」，由 ē-（向外）加 volvō（滾動）組成，原本講的就是把書卷攤開。今天的「慢慢演變」正是這個動作放慢來看：一圈一圈往外推，前一段決定後一段。順帶一提，volvō 這個「滾」也留在 revolve（轉回來）、involve（捲進去）、volume（原指一卷書）裡，記住這個「捲」，一整組字都好認。
