1. 1

To evangelize is to try to persuade people to become Christians — to tell them the “good news” of the gospel and invite them to believe. Churches, missionaries, and some campus groups use this as a normal, serious verb. It can be done kindly or it can feel ; that depends on how it is done and on who is listening. Though actually, English now stretches the word a long way outside religion. Someone can evangelize for a phone, a diet, a piece of software: they talk about it with convert-the-world energy, as if you really ought to join them. In that looser use it is a little informal and sometimes slightly teasing — “He’s been evangelizing about that app all week.” The religious sense remains the core one, and in formal church language it still means Christian mission, not product talk. American spelling is evangelize; British English often uses evangelise. The old English verb for the same Christian work was built on gospel; this Greek-French line of the word later took its place in educated English.

組成evangel + -ize, from Old French évangéliser, from Late Latin, from Ancient Greek euangelízō “to bring good news” (eu- “good” + a word for “message”). It took the place of Old English godspellian, literally “to gospel.”
