A Europhile is a person — very often a politician in the United Kingdom — who likes the European Union a lot and wants their country to stay close to it, or grow even closer. In British politics this word sits on one side of a long fight: Europhiles pull toward the EU; Eurosceptics pull away. It can be said in a straight way, but in a newspaper it is sometimes a label, not a compliment, as if the person loved Brussels more than home. Though actually, many people who like Europe the place — the food, the trains, the holidays — are not Europhiles in this political sense. This word is about the EU as a club of governments.
