A Eurocrat is a person who works as an official for the European Union — the club of European countries that share many laws and, for a lot of them, money. You will meet the word in newspapers and in angry political talk far more than on anyone’s office door. It is not a kind job title. It often means “one of those EU people in Brussels who make rules the rest of us did not ask for.” Though actually, many so-called Eurocrats are ordinary government workers doing paper work, same as in any capital. The word almost always feels a little cold, and it is much more at home in a British headline than in friendly chat.
組成A blend of euro- (Europe / the EU) and bureaucrat. People also read it as euro- + -crat. The ending -crat comes from ancient Greek kratos, “power” or “rule.” The bureau in bureaucrat is French for “office.”
