1. 1

A eulogy is a speech or a piece of writing that praises someone a great deal, especially at a funeral. Friends and family often take turns to give a short eulogy. The word can stretch to praise of a thing — a eulogy to an old city, a eulogy for a dying craft — but the funeral speech is still the picture most people have. It is formal. You would not call a quick “she’s great” a eulogy; the word suggests a set piece, with care and some length. Though actually, people sometimes use it a little loosely for any warm tribute.

    • It was the prettiest and most luxurious little sitting-room I had ever seen; and I admired it with the warmest enthusiasm. He bowed with icy deference when my terms of eulogy were all exhausted, and silently opened the door for me to go out into the passage again.
    • The Southampton striker, who also struck a post late on, was being serenaded by the Wembley crowd before the end and should probably brace himself for some Lambert-mania over the coming days but, amid the eulogies, it should not overlook the deficiencies that were evident in another stodgy England performance.
