If you describe a group ethnographically, you do it the way a field researcher does: you stay, watch, listen, and try to show their life from the inside, not as a pile of numbers. The adverb means “in the manner of ” — by a thick, close-up picture. It is formal and academic; you meet it in papers, not in shops. Older books spoke of “ of people.” Though actually, the work today is about a culture, a community, or an ethnic group. Scholars no longer treat “race” as a neat scientific type of human, so that old wording is tidier than the truth.
