Ethnographic is the adjective for ethnography: the scientific, close description of how a group of people live. An ethnographic study, ethnographic notes, or an ethnographic film tries to show daily life from the inside, not only from a distant chart. Older lines say this work is about “races of people”; though actually, modern use is about culture and community more than race. The word is academic and fairly formal. You will see it on course lists and in research, and sometimes in museums or documentaries that promise a careful look at a way of life. It describes the method or the product; it is not the person (that is ethnographer) and not the field or the book as a noun (that is ethnography). People stretch it a little to any richly observed portrait of a group, even outside a university.
