Ethanol is the alcohol in beer, wine, and spirits — the kind that makes people drunk. Chemists use this exact name because everyday 'alcohol' is a whole family of chemicals, and some of them are poison. Ethanol is also used as a fuel for cars, alone or mixed into petrol; some places grow crops to make it. It is a clear liquid. In class you may see it written C2H5OH. Shops and hospitals also use it to clean skin and surfaces, often mixed with water. The messy bit for daily life: a bottle labelled 酒精 in a Taiwan pharmacy may be ethanol, or it may be another cleaning alcohol such as isopropanol. Ethanol is the drinking kind and the fuel kind. On a drinks label you will just see alcohol; ethanol is the science name.

組成eth- (from ethyl, the two-carbon piece; ethyl was named from German Ether 'ether' + -yl) + -anol (the alcohol ending). So: ethyl alcohol. The alcohol piece itself goes back through Medieval Latin alcohol to Arabic al-kuḥūl.
