The esophagus is the food tube inside your body. It carries what you swallow from your throat down to your stomach. Esophagus is the American spelling. British English , with an extra o near the start. Same tube, same word, different spelling — like other American/British pairs such as fetus/. Doctors and biology books use esophagus; everyday English often just says “food pipe,” or talks about when acid comes back up this tube. It is a medical, slightly formal word, not a playground word. Say it roughly as i-SOF-uh-gus.
