The soft tube that carries food and drink from the back of your mouth down to your stomach. It sits behind the , the tube for air. When you swallow, a small flap helps keep food out of the air tube, and muscles in the oesophagus squeeze the food down — so it is not just a hollow pipe that food falls through. British spelling keeps the oe; American spelling is esophagus. In plain talk people also say “food pipe.” If something “goes down the wrong way,” it has started toward the air tube, not this one.

組成From Ancient Greek οἰσοφάγος (oisophágos), from οἴσω (oísō), a future form of φέρω (phérō, “to carry”) + ἔφαγον (éphagon, “to eat”). The old idea in the name is a tube that carries what you eat.
