    ESOL stands for English for Speakers of Other Languages. It names English classes (and exams) for people whose first language is not English — often adults who have moved to an English-speaking country. The UK uses ESOL a great deal: you will see “ESOL class,” “ESOL teacher,” “ESOL exam.” is the close cousin: Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, the name of the job and of many teacher-training courses. Though actually, schools do not all mean the same thing by ESL, ESOL, and ; the letters grew up in different countries. ESL is the everyday US school label; ESOL is the everyday UK one; is what most English classes in Taiwan really are. If a form asks which one you need, read the small print rather than guessing from the abbreviation alone.
