An escritoire is a small desk made for writing, often with a lid that folds down to make a flat surface, and little drawers or pigeonholes for paper, pens, and letters. It is a furniture word with a French feel — the sort you meet in antique shops, old novels, and museum labels, not in an office-supply store. A modern desk can be any table you work at; an escritoire is specifically a writing cabinet, usually rather small, often pretty, and a bit old. Though actually, if you walked into a home in Taiwan and used the English word, almost nobody would nod; they would just say they needed a desk. Keep this one for the old, exact, slightly fancy object.
