An ergonomist is a person whose work is that careful design: they watch how people sit, stand, lift, type, and use tools, then they change the equipment or the layout so the job is safer and easier. You might find one in a factory, a hospital, or a large office. They are not doctors, though they care a lot about strain; they are not interior designers either, though they do think about chairs and desks. Their questions are practical: Can this worker reach the switch without twisting? Does this keyboard force the wrists up? Though actually, most people never say “ergonomist” in ordinary talk. They say “someone who does ergonomics,” or they fold the job into “health and safety.” The title lives mainly in specialist writing and in companies that take workplace design seriously.
