Epistemological is the adjective for epistemology — the part of philosophy about how we know things, and how firmly we can know them. An epistemological question is not “What happened?” but “How do you know that, and could you be wrong?” You will almost never hear this in a night market or a group chat; it lives in university essays and academic books. Though actually, students sometimes stretch it into a fancy of “philosophical”, but it is narrower. Questions about what is good and bad are ethics; questions about what is real are another branch; epistemological talk is only about knowing. If a paper mentions “epistemological problems in science”, it is asking whether the method really gives knowledge — not whether the lab was expensive. It is simply epistemology with -ical on the end.
