    Episcopal means “about a bishop”. A bishop is a senior church leader who looks after other priests and a whole area. So an episcopal palace is a bishop’s house, and an episcopal church is one organised with bishops. In the United States, the Episcopal Church is a proper name: the American cousin of the Church of England. Though actually, the Greek word behind it means “” or “”, which is the job a bishop is supposed to do. And here is a true link, not a folk story: the ordinary English word bishop is the same old word, just worn down by centuries of saying it quickly (Latin episcopus became Old English biscop, then bishop). Episcopal sounds Latin and formal; bishop sounds like home. Same job. You will see episcopal in news about churches, not in daily chat. It does not mean “Catholic” by itself: many churches have bishops.
