An epidemiologist is the person whose job is to study how diseases move through groups of people, and how to slow or stop them. They are not, in the usual picture, the hospital doctor treating your sore throat. They look at many people at once: who got ill, where, when, after what food or trip, and which groups are in more danger. From that pattern they try to find the cause and the rules that actually help — staying home, cleaner water, a vaccine. The study itself is called epidemiology; this word is the worker. You will hear it in news and public-health talk, not much at the dinner table. Though actually, TV often uses “epidemiologist” for anyone in a white coat who explains an outbreak. Some epidemiologists are doctors, but many come from statistics, biology, or public health — they are pattern-finders first.
