The environs of a place are the land around it — the nearby towns, roads, fields, and small settlements that sit just outside, not the place’s own streets. We almost always use it in the plural, and almost always with of: Paris and its environs; the environs of the old city.

Though actually, this is a book-and-news word more than a dinner-table word. In speech people say the area around, the outskirts, nearby. Do not slide it into environment. Environment is the natural world, or the conditions you live and work in. Environs is a map word: the ring around a city, a castle, a park. There is an old verb environ, “to surround,” and environs can be its he/she/it form, but almost nobody uses that verb in daily English any more. For learners, the plural noun is the meaning that matters.
