Entomology is the science of insects: beetles, bees, butterflies, ants, mosquitoes, and the rest. It is a branch of biology. University departments and museums use this name; a student can “study entomology” the way another student studies plants or the sea. The work can be kind (saving bees) or practical (stopping insects that eat rice). Though actually the word is not a casual one: in everyday talk people just say they like insects, and keep entomology for school, labs, and books.
