Enmity is a strong, lasting feeling of hate toward a person, a group, or even a country. It is the feeling you have for an enemy, not a small dislike after one bad afternoon. The word is rather formal and a bit old in daily chat; newspapers, history books, and serious talk still use it. You often hear enmity between X and Y, or an old enmity. Though actually, enmity is the feeling; enemy is the person. You can feel enmity without shouting. It can sit quietly for years.

組成From Middle English enemyte, from Old French enemisté, from Vulgar Latin *inimīcitās, from Latin inimīcus “enemy” (in- “not” + amīcus “friend”). By the look of the English word, enemy + -ity.
