1. 1

An enlarger is a machine from old-style photography. You put a small film picture in it, shine light through, and it throws a bigger picture onto paper so you can make a print. It is not a person, even though -er often means someone who does something, and it is not a general word for anything that makes stuff bigger. Though actually almost nobody uses a darkroom enlarger now — phones and computers pictures on a screen — so you will meet this word mainly in a photography class or in talk about the past. In that world it is the name of the machine.
