If something is enigmatic, it is mysterious and hard to understand. An enigmatic smile does not tell you if the person is happy, sad, or teasing you. An enigmatic message leaves you guessing. It is the adjective that belongs with enigma. It sounds a little literary, so you meet it in books, films, and careful speech more than in a text to a friend. Though actually people do stretch it: they call a quiet enigmatic when they mainly mean they do not know that person well yet. It is not a compliment by itself. It only says you cannot read them, not that they are wise.

組成enigma + -tic. From Latin aenigmaticus and French énigmatique, from Ancient Greek αἰνιγματικός (ainigmatikós). The -tic turns the noun into an adjective.
