1. 1

An enigma is a person or a thing that feels strange and hard to understand. You look, you think, and you still cannot quite see the answer. People often say it about someone who keeps their thoughts hidden: she is an enigma. It can also be a puzzle or a mystery in a story. The old meaning is close to a riddle — a dark saying that hides its point. It is a slightly word; friends might just say mystery. Though actually it is stronger than a small puzzle you can finish in a minute. An enigma stays with you. It is not engine and not enemy; those only look a little like it.
