1. 1

An enhancer is a person or, much more often, a thing that makes something better or stronger. A flavour enhancer is put in food so the taste comes out more. An image enhancer is a tool or app that makes a picture clearer. In sport, a performance enhancer is often a drug that helps an athlete — and that use is usually about cheating, not praise. The -er ending looks like a person, though actually with this word it is usually a thing: a chemical, an app, a machine. It is not a warm everyday word; you meet it on packets, in tech, and in news about sport.
