To enhance something is to make it better, stronger, clearer, or more pleasant — not to invent it from nothing, and not usually to something that is broken. You enhance flavour with a little salt, enhance a photo with light, enhance a skill with practice. The thing is already there; you raise its quality. Companies love the word (enhanced features, enhanced security) because it sounds like an upgrade without promising a brand-new thing. It is a little more formal than improve, and it often suggests adding quality on top. You would not naturally enhance the number of chairs in a room — you add more chairs. You enhance how the room feels. Though actually, the old meaning was closer to “raise” or “lift up,” from a Latin word for high. That lift is still inside the modern sense: you are raising something, not replacing it.
