It is a soft, whole surrounding, not a quick cover and not a hard grab. Writers like this word more than everyday speakers do; in chat people usually say wrap, hug, or surround. You can enfold a child in your arms, enfold a gift in paper, or say the hills were enfolded in cloud. Though actually, it sits close to , but enfold keeps the picture of folding something around a person, as if they were being tucked in.
組成en- (in / around) + fold. An older form was infold, from Middle English infolden.
