An endearment is a word or a small action that shows your love or fondness for someone — “honey,” “darling,” a private nickname, a squeeze of the hand. Terms of endearment are those pet names. It is a noun for the expression of love, not for love itself sitting quietly in the heart. Families and couples use endearments; some classrooms and offices never would. Though actually, an endearment can feel warm at home and odd, even rude, with a stranger: the same “sweetie” that comforts a child can sound wrong to a shop assistant. The word itself is a little old-fashioned and ; people live the thing more than they name it. You will meet it in stories and in the set phrase “a term of endearment.”
