Something endearing makes people like you, or even feel fond of you — a small habit, a look, a way of talking that warms people rather than impresses them. An endearing smile, an endearing shyness, an endearing habit of thanking the bus driver. It is a soft, kind adjective, not as strong as “adorable,” and not as grand as “” in a romantic way. You can use it of people, animals, and little behaviours. Though actually, it often points at a flaw that people forgive: an endearing messiness, an endearing nervous laugh. The mess is still a mess; it just makes others feel closer to you. It comes from the verb endear, “to make someone dear.” In everyday speech, “cute” or “sweet” cover some of the same ground, but endearing is a little more thoughtful: it is about winning affection, not only looking pretty.
