1. 1

An empress is either a woman who rules an empire herself, or the wife of an emperor. English is happy with one word for both; you have to hear the story to know which. “Empress Dowager” is the emperor’s mother, often a powerful widow in the palace. The ending -ess marks “female,” as in actress, though that pattern feels less modern now. Though actually, the tidy picture “female emperor” misses how often the word just means “the emperor’s wife,” with no ruling of her own. And do not let the spelling trick you into press or impress: those are different words. This one is built from emperor.

    女皇(自己統治時);皇后(當皇帝妻子時)
