    An emplacement is a prepared spot where a large gun sits and — a pit, a concrete nest, a platform on a hill. Soldiers build it so the gun does not slide, and so the crew has a little cover. You will meet it in history books, war reports, and visits to old forts. It is a specialist military word; a civilian will usually just say “where the gun was.” Though actually, the French pieces look like “in” + “placing,” so the tidy origin is simply “a putting-in-place.” English kept the grand, narrow meaning: not any place you put a cup, but the place built for a big gun.
