An Emmy is a prize given each year in the United States for excellent work in television: acting, writing, directing, and more. The prize itself is a small statue of a woman. People say win an Emmy, Emmy-winning, or she has three Emmys. There is a big night when many prizes are given, though actually it is not one single show — different groups of prizes (for example daytime programmes) have their own night. Fans talk about Emmys in an everyday way; the ceremony itself is quite grand. It is not a word for 'any gold statue' and not a British prize.
