Emigration is the act of leaving your own country in order to live in another one. You ; the leaving itself is emigration. English is about direction here, though Chinese often is not. Emigration is the going-away. Immigration is the arriving — same journey, two names, depending which country you are standing in. A family that leaves Taiwan for Canada is in emigration from Taiwan’s point of view, and in immigration from Canada’s. News writers talk about an “emigration wave” when many people leave at once. It is a slightly formal, forms-and-newspapers word. In everyday talk people often just say they moved abroad. It is not the same as migration in the wide sense, which can also mean animals moving with the seasons, or people moving inside one country.
