    To emigrate is to leave your own country in order to live in another country. The e- at the front is “out.” If your aunt emigrates to Australia, she is leaving from here. The matching verb for arriving is : Australians would say she to Australia. Migrate is the more general word: people and birds migrate when they move from one place to another, not always across a country line for a new home. Emigrate is the one that means “make a new life in another country, leaving the old one behind.”
