A professor emeritus (or a director emeritus) has stopped doing the job, but the university or the company lets them keep the old title as an honour. They are not ; they have finished their service, and the title is a thank-you that stays. You will see it after a name: Professor Emeritus Chen. It can be an adjective (an emeritus professor) or a noun (an emeritus). The Latin plural is emeriti; some people still use that in formal writing. A woman is sometimes called emerita, though many places now use emeritus for everyone. It is a respectful, rather ceremonial word. You would not use it for someone who just left a shop job.

From Latin ēmeritus 'having served out one's time', past participle of ēmereō, from ex- + mereō 'to earn, serve'.
