Embryology is the scientific study of embryos — how living things grow in those first days and weeks, from a fertilised egg into a body. It asks questions like: when does a heart start to beat, how do hands form, what can go wrong so early? It sits next to biology and medicine. Students of medicine learn some of it; people who work with fertility, with farm animals, or with development in the lab learn more. The word is made of embryo plus -logy, which means “the study of,” the same piece you meet in biology and geology. It is a classroom and laboratory word, not a word for the kitchen table. Though actually, it is not the same as the care of pregnant women (that is closer to obstetrics), and it is not the study of genes (genetics), even though those fields talk to each other. Embryology is about how the early body is built.
