An embryo is a living thing in the very earliest stage of growing, right after it starts to develop - for humans, this usually means roughly the first eight weeks after conception, before it's called a fetus. You'll meet this word most in biology class and in medical or news contexts. There's also a figurative use: an idea 'in embryo' means it's still at a very early, unformed stage, like a plan that's barely started.
