An embezzler is a person who steals money from the place where they work — not by breaking in at night, but by using their job. They already hold a position of trust: they may keep the accounts, handle cash, or sign papers. Bit by bit they take money that is not theirs and hide it. This is a serious, grown-up word, used in the news and in court, not in playground talk. A thief can steal from anyone. An embezzler steals from their own workplace, and the people around them often trusted them. Though actually the taking can be slow and quiet, a little each month, so it may be a long time before anyone sees what has happened.
