Embezzlement is the crime of stealing money from the place where you work — taking funds you were trusted to hold, and using your job to do it. It is the noun for that act. News reports and court papers use it; everyday talk might just say “stole from the company.” It is not a sudden grab in the street. It is stealing from inside. The harm is the broken trust as much as the missing money. You can speak of embezzlement of public funds, or of a company’s money. The verb is embezzle; the person is an embezzler.
